Panayiotis Kanellopoulos is a graduate of the Faculty of Primary Education of the University of Athens. He used a grant from the State Scholarship Foundation to do postgraduate studies in Musical Pedagogy at Reading University (MA, 1994- PhD, 2000).
He has taught music in primary schools, and Musical Pedagogy in the Pre-School Studies and Educational Design of the University of the Aegean, and the School of Music Studies of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Since 2005, he has been teaching in the Department of Preschool Education Sciences and Educational Design of the University of Thessaly, where he is now an Associate Professor.
His research interests focus mainly on the study of children’s musical improvisation and their perceptions of music-making processes. He is also interested in anthropological-ethnographic approaches to musical creativity, in qualitative-sociological approaches to musical education, and the philosophy of musical education.
His research work has been published in international and Greek specialist journals, as well as in collections of articles and proceedings of conferences. During the period 2009-2013, he was Co-Chairman of the International Society for the Philosophy of Music Education, helping to organize the recent symposium of this international society (New York, Columbia University, June 2013). He is also an active musician, collaborating with free improvisation ensembles like Acte Vide and the 6daEXit Ensemble for Improvised Music.
He has performed on the mandolin in a number of recordings (albums by Tatiana Zographou, Nikos Xydakis, Sofia Kamayianni and Ludovicos ton Anoyeion). He has appeared in concert with small ensembles in Greece, England and Cyprus, and has also worked with the State Orchestras of Athens and Thessaloniki, as well as the Orchestra of Colours.
